SMHA Applications to Hockey Sask - Female and Male AA Hockey

In February 2023, SMHA made application to Hockey Sask for what teams we wished to ice in 2023-24 in female U13AA, female U15AA, male U18AA and the new male U16AA league Hockey Sask is looking to create.

Background:

Hockey Sask asked for minor hockey associations in Saskatchewan to make application for the following leagues for play in 2023-24:

SMHA APPLICATIONS TO HOCKEY SASK:

Female U13AA - SMHA applied to Hockey Sask to have two (2) U13AA Female teams for the 2023-24 season - up from the current one female U13AA team.

Female U15AA - SMHA applied to Hockey Sask to have two (2) U15AA Female teams for the 2023-24 season - up from the current one female U15AA team.

* In both cases above, the Saskatoon Comets and SMHA want to provide more female players the opportunity to play and develop at the AA level.

Male U18AA - SMHA applied to Hockey Sask to maintain our current four U18AA teams - three teams comprised of 15-17-year olds (Ice Hawks, Sabercats and Screaming Eagles) and one team comprised of 15-year-olds only (Riverkings).

Male U16AA - Hockey Sask is looking to start a new league in 2023-24 they are calling 15AA (we prefer U16AA for consistency).  MHA's were asked to apply for U16AA teams if they were interested in hosting one.  Saskatoon and Regina were expected to each apply for a team.  Hockey Sask's hope is that the new U16 teams will be hosted in centers that do not have to host a U18AA team.  All MHA's that have a U18AAA team must host a U18AA team.  Using the example of Warman and Martensville, Hockey Sask's hope is that Martensville would apply for the U16AA team because Warman must have a U18AA team.  MHA's could apply for both as is the case with the larger centers.

SMHA has made it clear that it wishes to maintain its Riverkings program in the U18AA league.  Since being established in 2014, the program has been extremely successful in taking players that were close to the AAA level and having them play a season together and then make the jump to AAA.  Playing against U18 players like they would in AAA is important to this development.

Hockey Sask informs that they will be notifying MHA's with their decisions by March 31, 2023.
